Our Vision
May Street Church occupies a prime location in Belfast, but our real vision is to occupy a prominent position within the Economic, Social, Cultural and Spiritual regeneration of our City and Nation. Our vision is expansive, our aims high and our objectives radical but already we are seeing the City respond to what is more than simply a message.
May Street is a safe place in Belfast City Centre where people can worship, lunch, relax and introduce friends to a non threatening Christian culture. We are a soft interface between Church and today’s culture. May Street is a special place that understands City centre workers because we occupy the same space and have well-developed links with the City's commercial heart.
To become what we seek to be, we must abandon the old ways of thinking that has constrained so many Churches in the past. We recognise that we live in a post modern era, and that many Christians consider themselves as post denominationalist. Our aim is to positively engage with society, providing a radical approach that helps people to make their personal journey towards faith and commitment.
Preaching homilies is no longer enough. We seek to address the minds of those who come with intelligent arguments by providing a Biblical understanding of issues such as the economy; the struggles we have with personal identity and self-esteem; the shortcomings of the evolutionary world view and social injustice. Such topics are as relevant to an understanding of the gospel as any sermon. The Church must learn to interact with the community that is actually there, rather than what we wish was there.
May Street is unashamedly evangelical. This means that we believe there is an exciting and liberating message of the forgiveness of sins and removal of guilt that so many people find crushes them today. Recognising that we exist in an oppressive and judgemental society, we celebrate Grace and Love and offer acceptance to all, whilst helping them become more like Jesus.
